Left Turn Lane Design Options
Thank you to everyone that provided comment on this. At it's meeting on February 8th, City Council approved to go with Option 1, regarding the locations of Left Turn Lanes.
Taking into consideration the comments that were received, it was felt that the Washington Ave. intersection could better accommodate turn lanes for both directions of traffic and retain the most on street parking.
Option 1 – There would be a turn lane of 102 feet for “east bound” traffic desiring to turn northbound onto Washington Avenue, and there would be a 51 foot turn lane for “west bound” traffic desiring to turn southbound onto Washington Avenue. In other words, this has the north and south turn lanes at one intersection.
This option retains some street parking on both sides of the street in the vicinity of the Hansen’s IGA. The some of the bump-outs at the intersection at Washington Avenue are reduced, but there are bump-outs at all four corners at 3rd Avenue West.
Option 2 – There would be a turn lane of 75 feet for “east bound” traffic desiring to turn northbound onto Washington Avenue, and traffic desiring to turn south bound would have a turn lane at 3rd Avenue West instead of Washington. In other words, the north turn lane is at Washington Avenue and the south turn lane is at 3rd Avenue West.
This option retains parking on the entire length of the north side of the highway, but eliminates the parking on the south side of the highway fronting Hansen’s IGA. The bump-outs on the south side of the intersection at 3rd Avenue West are also eliminated. Only the bump-out at the SW corner at Washington Avenue would be reduced.
